Den Box Project

The Den Box Project puts well-built nest boxes into the landscape, made by the communities that live there.

A timber nest box mounted on a tree trunk.

Quolls den in tree hollows, rock crevices, and — recordedly — old termite mounds. Hollows take a century to form and are in short supply in cleared and regrowth country. A correctly built den box is a serviceable substitute.

The boxes are built locally: by schools, men's sheds, and ranger groups across 22 local government areas. QED supplies the plans, the predator-baffle hardware, and a siting visit; the community supplies the labour and, usually, better timber than we would have bought.

It is also the program through which most people first meet QED. A den box build day is a low bar to entry and a genuine contribution, and a surprising number of our seasonal field volunteers started at one.
